- How to take
Generic Famvir should be taken with a full glass of water, during meals or otherwise; however, taking it with food will reduce the risk of upset stomach. Take the medication exactly as prescribed and for the prescribed period.
- Side effects
If you experience any symptoms associated with allergies such as difficulty breathing, hives, swollen tongue etc., stop using the medication and seek urgent medical help.
Common side effects of Famvir include: nausea and vomiting; pain in the stomach; headache; sleepiness and confusion; skin itching or rash. Contact your medical specialist for instructions if any of those become bothersome or persist. - Precautions
Start taking Famvir as soon as the first symptoms of herpes appear such as tingling, blisters and burning. Continue the course even if the symptoms have reduced.
Stay properly hydrated while taking the medication to protect your kidneys.
Wash your hands frequently to prevent passing the infection to others.
As herpes is contagious, wash your hands frequently to prevent other people from getting it.
Famvir medication does not prevent the spread of genital herpes. For this reason, refrain from sexual intercourse or use latex condoms. Keep the affected areas clean.
Avoid using Famvir during pregnancy, unless the benefit of it exceeds the risks. Notify your doctor of your pregnancy or pregnancy plans. It is yet unknown whether Famvir has the ability to pass into breast milk. - Drug interactions
Notify your doctor in advance if you are taking probenecid (Benemid), as it may require changing the dosage of Famvir or render its use impossible. Other medications can interact with Famvir as well.
Notify your doctor of all medications you have been taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and herbs. - Missed dose
If you have missed your dose of Generic Famvir, make sure to take it as soon as possible. However, two doses should never be taken at the same time, so if the time for the next dose has almost come, DO NOT take the dose you have missed.
